Dedicate Daf 13b to:

This one
- Yosef -
kept what was written in that one
- the Aron, (as Yosef kept all of the ten commandments).

But had Moshe not dealt with
Yosef
, would the Jews not have taken care of
transporting his body to Israel for burial? They were bound by the same oath!

But is it not written that "the bones of Yosef, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, they buried in Shechem."

The Jews did take care of Yosef (after Moshe passed away and was no longer able to do so.)

And moreover, if the Jews wouldn't have taken care of
Yosef
, would his sons not have taken care of him?

But is it not written "and they became the inheritance of the children of Yosef?"

Yosef's descendants buried him in their portion, showing their love of him.

Yosef's descendants said
that we should leave
the burial
alone, as
Yosef's
honor
is heightened through burial
by a multitude rather than a few,

and the Jewish people
said
that Yosef's honor is better
served by the great
(Moshe)
than the small.

The Gemara will now discuss Yosef:
"They buried
Yosef
in Shechem"

The Gemara Asks:
Why
was Yosef buried in
Shechem?

The Gemara Asks:
Rabbi Chama the son of Rabbi Chanina
that Yosef was buried from
where he was kidnapped
by his brothers - since he was kidnapped in Shechem he was returned to Shechem.

The Gemara Asks:
The verses contradict each other:

One verse says
that "Moshe took the bones of Yosef with him",

While the other verse says
that "And the bones of Yosef, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt"?

Who transported Yosef's coffin? Moshe or the Jews?

The Gemara Answers:
א"ר
Rabbi Chama he son of Rabbi Chanina said that if
one starts a good deed
but someone else finishes it, the Torah considered the
second person
to have done it.

Moshe started the job, but he passed away before the Jews entered Israel, so others had to do the actual burial.

Moreover,
Rabbi Elazar said that
Hashem
also removes
the one who doesn't complete the Mitzvah
from power,

Only if he purposefully didn't finish the job.

As
the verse says
"And it came to pass at that time, that Yehuda went down
(was brought down from power)".

He saved Yosef from being killed by his brothers, but didn't prevent his sale.

Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmeni said that
one who doesn't complete a good deed
also buries his wife and children,

As
the verse
says " Shua's daughter, the wife of Yehuda, died."

And
the verse
says that "Er and Onan died".

So Yehuda lost his wife and children because he didn't save Yosef from being sold into slavery.

Rav Yehuda said in the name of Rav that
the reason
Yosef
was
called close
He said "please bring up my "bones" with you, despite still being alive.
"bones" in his lifetime
was
because he did not protest
the disrespect shown
to his father,

As
Yosef's brothers told him
"Your servant our father", and
Yosef
didn't protest.

Rav Yehuda said in the name of Rav,

And some say
that Rav Yehuda said the following teaching in the name of
Rabbi Chama the son of Rabbi Chanina,

Why did Yosef pass away before his brothers? Because he held a position of power.

"And Yosef was brought down to Egypt"

א"ר
Rabbi Elazar said that one shouldn't read "was brought down" but
rather
"brought down",

Yosef
brought down Pharaohs astrologers from their greatness,

When they were unable to interpret Pharaoh's dreams, Pharaoh fired them.

"And Potifar, an officer of Pharaoh's"

Rav said that
Potifar
bought
Yosef
for his
immoral purposes,

So Hashem sent the angel
Gavriel and
doubly
castrated
Potifar.

For that reason,
Potifar
was renamed to
Potifera.

Discussed in Mishna Who is greater than Moshe?

"And Hashem said unto me: 'Let it suffice for you'"

The Gemara will give three interpretations to this verse:
א"ר
1.
Rav Levi the son of Rav said that with
the word
"much"
Moshe
told others,
so
with "much"
did Hashem
tell
Moshe.

Moshe
told
Korach
"It is much for you",

Since Moshe told Korach "You want too much, stay a Levi and don't go for the Kehuna"...

With
the word
"enough" Moshe was informed
by Hashem that he will not go to Israel, as the verse says
"It is much for you".

Hashem punished Moshe, saying that it's time for Yehoshua's reign to begin.

Another interpretation
of the verse "it is much for you":

2.
You have a master - Yehoshua.

Another interpretation
of the verse "it is enough for you":

3. Hashem ordered Moshe
"Enough
begging!"

Stop complaining so that people would
not say "How hard is the Teacher, and how stubborn is the student".

The Gemara Asks:
Why
did Hashem punish Moshe
so
hard?

The academy of Rabbi Yishmael said that based on a camel is its load.

One's punishment is proportional to his greatness. Since Moshe was so great, his punishment was so harsh.

The Gemara will now discuss Moshe's passing:
Moshe
told
the Jewish people
"I am a hundred and twenty today".

The Gemara Asks:
היום
Why does
the verse
say
the word
"today"?

The Gemara Answers:
Moshe said that
today Hashem filled
his
years
(That day was Moshe's birthday).

Which
teaches that Hashem fills the days of the righteous
so they pass away on the same
day and month
as they were born,

As
the verse
says "the number of your days I will fill".

"I can no more go
out
and come
in".

The Gemara Asks:
What does
the verse mean?

If
the interpretation is that
Moshe was unable to
physically
go or come
(he was physically weak),

A later verse shows how that interpretation is untenable, for the verse says
"his eye did not dim, and his sap did not flee".

And
the verse says
"And Moses went up from the plains of Moav to Mount Nevo",

And a Braisa
was taught that
despite there being
twenty one steps
between the plains of Moav and the top of Mt. Nevo
, Moshe was able to jump them all in one leap.

So Moshe obviously stayed physically strong.

The Gemara Answers:
א"ר
Rather,
Rabbi Shmuel bar Nachmeni said in the name of Rav Yonasan
that Moshe was unable
to
do "give and take"
in the words of Torah,

Which means that his gates of wisdom were sealed.

Moshe and Yehoshua gathered in the
Mishkan,

A Braisa
was taught that on that Shabbos, there were two leaders, as the reign was removed from one
(Moshe)
and passed to the other
(Yehoshua).

The Gemara continues to expound on Moshe's passing:
Rabbi Yehuda said that if not for an
explicit
verse, we would be unable to say
the following:

The Gemara Asks:
Where did Moshe pass away?

The Gemara Answers:
In Reuven's portion,

As
the verse writes
"And Moshe went up from the plains of Moav to Mt. Nevo."

And Nevo was in the plains of Reuven,

As
the verse writes
"And the children of Reuven, his son ... and Nevo ..."

The Gemara Asks:
Where was Moshe buried?

The Gemara Answers:
In the portion of Gad,

As
the verse says
"And
Moshe
saw
fit to take
for himself
a portion in the land of Sichon and Og, which is the
first",

The Gemara Asks:
How far is the portion of Reuven to the portion of Gad?

The Gemara Answers:
Four Mil
- 8000 cubits (which is around 2.5 miles).

The Gemara Asks:
Who carried Moshe for those four Mil?

The Gemara Answers:
Moshe was placed in the wings of the Divine presence,

The Gemara will now mention seven opinions of the eulogies which were delivered on Moshe's passing:
1.
And the supernal angels said "He did the righteousness of Hashem and His judgments with Israel",

2.
And Hashem said "Who will arise for me against the evildoers
(to rebuke them)
? Who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?"

3.
And Shmuel said
that Hashem said
"Who is like the Sages, who knows how to compromise
between Me and My children - the Jewish people?"

4.
Rabbi Yochanan said
that Hashem expressed himself saying
"But wisdom, where shall it be found?"

Rav Nachman said:

"And Moses died there"

5.
close
Some say he was an angel, others say he was a Rabbi
Smalion said that "Moshe died there, the great scribe of Israel".

A Braisa
was taught in the name of Rabbi Eliezer the Great,

6.
A Heavenly Voice rang out over twelve mil by twelve mil,
(which
is the size of the Jewish camp
) that
Moshe passed away, the great scribe of Israel.

7.
And some say that Moshe never died:

It says
about his death that
"Moshe died there,"

And it says
about the forty days which Moshe spent on the top of Mt. Sinai
"And he was there with Hashem."

Just as
during the forty days Moshe
was standing and serving, so too now
, after his death,
Moshe is standing and serving.

"And they buried him in a valley in the land of Moav, opposite Beis Peor."

א"ר
Rabbi Berachia said that there
were many
signs
given for Moshe's burial plot,

Nonetheless, no one knows where he's buried.

And the Evil Kingdom
(i.e, the Roman)
sent emissaries.
